Hodder Valley May Queen
This is an annual event held every year in the Hodder Valley on the bank holiday Monday at the end of May. The villages of the Hodder Valley: - Slaidburn and Tosside, Newton, Dunsop Bridge and Lane Ends all take it in turns to choose a May Queen and her retinue from the primary school age children in their village. The first May Queen Festival was held in 1931. The festival still follows many of the traditions started over 75 years ago. The day begins with a church service at St Andrew Church, Slaidburn. At the service, primary school leavers are presented with a dictionary by Mr J King-Wilkinson, who also presents local children with a 50p piece (inflation has seen this rise from the old tradition of local children being presented with a sixpence). After the service a procession is led around the village of Slaidburn by the Slaidburn Silver Band followed by the May Queen of the previous year and the soon to be crowned new May Queen and both their retinues. The procession winds round the village round to the River Hodder where traditional village sports are held. The races such as three legged race, sack race and slow bike race are still as popular as ever. During the afternoon delicious homemade refreshments are served.
