Walking and Cycling

Walking

Slaidburn provides an ideal base for discovering the wide variety of walks that the Forest of Bowland offers.

The Hodder Valley is a paradise for walkers of all abilities. From a short stroll around the village or by the river to a strenuous walk across the Bowland Fells - you can have it all. There are also walks through pasture and meadow land, some excellent riverside walks and a 9 mile circular walk around Stocks Reservoir which follows parts of the route of the temporary railway used in the construction of the reservoir dam.

A particularly pleasant walk of about six miles goes out of the village from the Old Bridge along the footpath, passed Hammerton Hall which is a fine building now converted into two dwellings. Then along the path to Raingill Farm with its unusual barn and on to edge of Gisburn Forest. Next turn left down the road to Dalehead Church which is an interesting building with an exhibition inside and which has a wind turbine producing its electricity and many wild flowers and plants in the Church Yard. Across the road and up Black House drive taking in breathtaking views of the reservoir and follow another footpath that leads back to Hammerton Hall and on to the village.

Cycling

The area has good facilities for both road and off road cyclists.  The Lancashire Cycle Way passes directly through Slaidburn and provides an excellent long distance route for touring cyclists.  Gisburn Forest has a range of mountain bike tracks through the varied forestry within the hilly catchment area of Stocks Reservoir.  The forest tracks, some challenging and others more gentle, start from Cocklet Hill car park which is just over three miles from the hall.
